Student Group Travel Grant

International Programs is pleased to maintain a fund that provides one-time support to faculty who wish to develop new opportunities to include international travel as one component of an undergraduate course. Courses may be semester-long or summer session, or an established course that adds a new travel component, or a new course. Awards may be up to $5,000, and the funds may be used for undergraduate courses in any discipline.

These funds are intended to give students exposure to foreign places and cultures that complement their coursework. Funds should be used to help reduce the cost for students of participation in the program.

The faculty member leading the project will be required to submit a short description of the overseas visit upon return, focusing on successes and lessons learned. In addition, the faculty member is expected to work with the International Programs, Education Abroad office to be sure that all Penn State procedures for student international travel are followed (including the mandated insurance coverage) and that appropriate logistical and security support is considered. (Click Here for more information on program development.)

Priority Areas
Priority will be given to:

  • group travel connected with a newly created course;
  • courses that are designed to serve students of several disciplines;
  • student travel in disciplines where study abroad participation is limited;
  • travel for 100-300 level courses;
  • travel to non-Western destinations;
  • proposals that will receive support from other sources (department, college, or external sources).

International Programs is for the most part unable to fund projects in their entirety, and this grant program is intended to supplement available resources and serve as seed money to encourage the development of courses which include an international experience. Thus proof of some matching funds from the relevant college and of application to outside sources is required.

Application materials should include:

  • a completed MS Word file application form;
  • a short description (no more than two pages in length) of the proposed project addressing priority areas set forth by the University Office of International Programs;
  • a brief outline of the proposed budget, detailing major costs and indicating matching funds from other sources if available;
  • an email indicating approval from the college dean, department/division heads, or the deans’ designees or other administrator authorized to approve grant applications on behalf of the college, must be sent to gfriedman@ip.psu.edu to complete the application process;

Evaluation
Proposals will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • ability to address the priority areas listed above;
  • impact on the overall internationalization of Penn State;
  • creativity and rigor of the project.

Deadlines and Application Procedure
Applications for support should be received by International Programs no later than by 5:00 pm on the following dates:

     November 1 for Spring Semester and Spring Break
     February 1 for Summer Semester
     June 1 for Fall Semester and Winter Break

All application materials must be submitted via email as MS Word attachments to the faculty liaison, Gilbert Friedman, at gfriedman@ip.psu.edu before the deadline.

Decisions on funding will be made within three weeks of application deadline.

Questions should be directed to.
